Yesterday, the movie about an up and comer from the Dirty D had its the dirty dozenth anniversary. With its release 12 years ago, Eminem blessed us with this semi-biopic about his start in the underground rap battle scene in Detroit, and showed the whole world that he was more than just a factory for offensive commentary.
I remember getting the DVD the following Christmas and watching it with my two best friends in one of their basements, pausing it every time his dad would come down to check on us (right in the middle of the sex scenes, too). That was before I became a true rap nerd, but I was already a long-time Slim Shady fan. By the time it was over, I had this weird rush where I was really complacent/awed and couldn’t place why exactly, but knew I’d just witnessed something great.
Hopefully, someone else felt some type of way about this movie too, and if you’ve never been so fortunate to see it, make it part of your Netflix rotation this weekend.
